CLEIJ ORIENTAL ART
Fine Chinese plate with peonies
Description
The decoration of this deep plate is executed in extremely fine detail. Such detailed
decorations are typical for the blue and white wares made during the reign of the
Chinese emperor Yongzheng (1723-1735). This plate certainly is an excellent example
from his reign. The decoration consists of a large peony group. This central decoration
is surrounded along the rounded well by flower cartouches reserved on an ornamental
band. This design element is reminiscent of the earlier Kangxi era. The rim is decorated
with a garland with flowers, leaves and fruits. The plate has an attractive brown
rim. The diameter of this deep plate is almost 9 inches (22.5 cm).
Condition
Excellent, with some small chips to the rim (largest 0.15-inch, others smaller)
as well as some kiln dust in the glaze.
Age
Yongzheng, circa 1730.
