Fine Chinese Famille Rose cup and saucer
Description
This fine Chinese teacup and saucer set is decorated in the Famille Rose palette.
Both the saucer and the inside of the cup have a rare pattern consisting of a mythical
animal on a pedestal surrounded by flowers and rocks. On the saucer, this central
decoration is surrounded by four peony cartouches reserved on an elaborate ornamental
band. The rim is decorated with four additional cartouches reserved on a rose enameled
band. A matching decoration can be found on the cup. This set is made out of thin
translucent porcelain. The decoration and the enamels are of the highest quality
existing for Famille Rose wares. They are typical for the best wares produced during
the reign of the Chinese emperor Yongzheng (1723-1735). The diameter of the saucer
is 5.25 inches (13.3 cm) and the height of the cup is 1.75 inches (4.4 cm).
Condition
Excellent, with the saucer having three tiny (0.05-inch) frits to the rim and
the cup having noticeable glaze wear and small chips to the rim. Remarkably, there
is almost no wear to the enameled highlights.
Age
Yongzheng, circa 1730.
