Two small Batavia ware cups and saucers

This set of two matching Chinese cups and saucers has an attractive brown glaze, typical for the so called Batavia wares. The front of the saucers and the interior of the cups is decorated with flowers and ornamental motives. The size of this set is quite remarkable, since these pieces are smaller than common teacups and saucers from the reign of the Chinese emperor Qianlong (1736-1795). The diameter of the saucers is 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) and the height of the cups is just over 1.25 inches (3.3 cm).

Excellent, with both saucers being perfect and both cups having stress fractures in the interior which do not go through the porcelain.

Qianlong, circa 1740.
